Its role Technology licensor
中石化(上海)石油化工研究院有限公司 (SINOPEC Shanghai Research Institute of Petrochemical Technology Co., Ltd., or SRIPT) is a comprehensive petrochemical research and development institution and a key subsidiary of China Petrochemical Corporation (Sinopec). Founded in 1960 as the Shanghai Petrochemical Research Institute to support early acrylic fiber production, it became a direct affiliate of Sinopec in 1984 and was formally renamed in 1990. In 2022, it was restructured as a limited liability company to enhance corporate governance.
SRIPT focuses on technological innovation and commercialization in organic raw materials (olefins, aromatics and derivatives), C1 chemistry, synthetic materials, oil and gas additives, and fine chemicals. Its core strengths lie in catalyst development and process technologies, with multiple generations of acrylonitrile catalysts and other products achieving industrial application in China and abroad. It operates primary research facilities in Shanghai's Pudong New Area and an engineering base in the Shanghai Chemical Industry Zone, along with branches at several Sinopec subsidiaries.
As part of the Sinopec group, SRIPT contributes to national petrochemical advancement through national-level platforms such as the Basic Organic Raw Materials Catalyst National Engineering Research Center and the Green Chemical and Industrial Catalysis National Key Laboratory. It has expanded into emerging strategic areas, including new energy materials, where its sodium-ion battery electrolyte technology reached batch commercial supply in 2026, supporting downstream cell manufacturers and integrated energy storage systems.
With extensive patent portfolios and numerous industry awards, SRIPT holds a prominent position as a technology provider and incubator within China's chemical and materials industry, driving both traditional petrochemical optimization and diversification into high-value new fields.
Also known as 上海石油化工研究院, 上海院, and 中石化上海石油化工研究院.
