Rohm and Haas Company was an American specialty chemicals manufacturer headquartered in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, founded in 1909 by Otto Röhm and Otto Haas. The company developed and produced acrylic materials (notably Plexiglas), coatings and adhesives ingredients, water treatment and ion-exchange resins, additives for architectural and industrial paints, biocides and preservatives, and electronic materials used in semiconductor manufacturing. Its products served markets including building and construction, packaging, consumer goods, transportation, electronics, and water management.
In 2009, The Dow Chemical Company acquired Rohm and Haas, and its businesses were integrated into Dow’s coatings, monomers, and specialty materials platforms; the Rohm and Haas name is now primarily of historical use. Earlier, Rohm and Haas had expanded through acquisitions such as Morton International; after the Dow transaction, the Morton Salt business was divested. The company’s legacy includes a global manufacturing and R&D footprint and longstanding contributions to acrylics, coatings technologies, and ion-exchange chemistry.
