Key facilities included the peat-fired plant in Wiesmoor, coal and gas plants in Emden and Farge, the Schilling heavy-oil plant, the Wilhelmshaven coal-fired station (commissioned in 1976), nuclear plants at Stade and Unterweser, the Huntorf compressed-air storage plant, and various gas turbine peaking plants. The company played a significant role in regional energy infrastructure development during the 20th century.

Originally established around 1900 as Siemens Elektrische Betriebe AG, a subsidiary of Siemens & Halske, it was renamed Nordwestdeutsche Kraftwerke AG in 1925 after coming under majority ownership of Preußische Elektrizitäts-AG (later PreussenElektra). It operated as a subsidiary within the PreussenElektra group until 1985, when it was merged into the parent company and dissolved. As a major regional utility, NWK contributed to the expansion of Germany's electricity grid and power generation capacity in the northwest.

Also known as Siemens Elektrische Betriebe AG and Nordwestdeutsche Kraftwerke.
