NUWARD is a French small modular reactor (SMR) developer led by EDF, focused on a standardized pressurized water reactor (PWR) concept for industrial and grid applications. The baseline plant combines two 170 MWe modules in a single facility (about 340 MWe total), building on proven PWR technology and European supply chains. The program is being advanced with industrial and research partners.
The NUWARD design targets flexible, low‑carbon electricity and process heat, including steam for industrial sites, cogeneration, and replacement of retiring fossil-fueled units. It emphasizes passive safety features, a compact footprint, and modular construction to enable factory manufacturing and shorter on-site assembly. For the chemical sector, the technology is positioned to provide stable, low‑emission power and steam to support electrification and decarbonization of energy‑intensive operations.
