National Gas Transmission plc (commonly known as National Gas) is the regulated owner and operator of Great Britain’s high‑pressure gas transmission network, the National Transmission System. It transports natural gas from offshore production, LNG import terminals and interconnectors to regional gas distribution networks and directly connected large industrial users, including chemical and process plants. The company operates and maintains pipelines, compressor stations and associated assets under the oversight of Ofgem.
As Great Britain’s gas transmission system operator, National Gas balances supply and demand on the network in real time, provides capacity and connection services to shippers and industrial customers, and plans network development to maintain security of supply. The company engages with government, regulators and industry on the potential future role of low‑carbon gases—such as hydrogen—within existing or repurposed infrastructure, subject to policy and safety approvals. Its activities are central to energy and feedstock reliability for UK industry and households.
