The Ministry of Economic Affairs, Industry, Climate Action and Energy of the State of North Rhine-Westphalia (NRW) is a state government department in Germany responsible for economic policy, industrial development, energy strategy, and climate protection in one of Europe’s largest industrial regions.
For the chemical and process industries, the ministry sets regulatory frameworks and runs funding and support programs aimed at innovation, competitiveness, and the transition to climate-neutral production. Its remit includes policies for energy efficiency, renewable and low-carbon energy supply, hydrogen and CO₂ infrastructure, circular economy, and digitalization. The ministry also coordinates permitting and planning for major energy and industrial projects, facilitates grid and pipeline expansion, and supports structural change in traditional industrial areas. It works with companies, industry associations, research institutions, and industrial park operators to advance technology deployment, strengthen supply chains, and align regional development with environmental and climate targets.
