Founded in the early 1970s by major oil companies to establish common operating practices for shared fuel facilities at airports, JIG was incorporated in 2002 in the United Kingdom as a company limited by guarantee. It operates a comprehensive inspection and compliance programme known as Inspected to JIG Standards (IJS), involving annual assessments by qualified inspectors at participating locations worldwide.

JIG standards, such as those for into-plane fueling services, airport depots and hydrants, and supply facilities, are endorsed by bodies including IATA and are applied at over 2,750 airports and fuel handling sites across more than 100 countries. These standards cover approximately 40-50% of global aviation fuel supply and are used by both members and non-members to ensure operational excellence and safety.

The organization has more than 120 member companies, ranging from multinational oil firms to specialist service providers. Oversight is provided by a council of representatives from founding guarantor members including BP, Chevron, Eni, ExxonMobil, Shell, and Total. JIG also offers inspector training programmes and collaborates on industry initiatives to update standards based on technological developments and operational feedback.

In the aviation fuel logistics sector, JIG serves as the preeminent authority for quality and safety benchmarks, supporting consistent high standards globally through its membership-driven model and reinvestment of revenues into technical services.
