Its role Owner
JECO 2 LTD is a UK-registered private limited company established in February 2010 specifically to hold a 2.5 percent equity interest in Minera Escondida Limitada, the Chilean company operating the Escondida copper mine. The mine, located in the Antofagasta region of northern Chile, is the world's largest copper producer and a key asset in the global copper supply chain.
The company is owned by a consortium of major Japanese industrial and trading firms: Mitsubishi Corporation with 50 percent, JX Nippon Mining & Metals Corporation (affiliated with Eneos Holdings) with 40 percent, and Mitsubishi Materials Corporation with 10 percent. This ownership structure was created when the Japanese partners acquired the stake from the International Finance Corporation to expand their participation in the Escondida joint venture.
Escondida is operated by BHP, which holds 57.5 percent, with Rio Tinto owning 30 percent and the broader Japanese group (including the related JECO Corporation entity holding 10 percent) accounting for the remaining 12.5 percent. JECO 2 LTD functions primarily as an investment holding company with no independent mining operations or production activities of its own.
Its registered office is in London, and its activities are limited to managing the financial and ownership interests associated with the Escondida project. The entity plays a role in facilitating Japanese corporate investment in one of the world's premier copper mining operations, supporting long-term resource security strategies for its parent companies in the metals and mining sector.
