The Inter-American Development Bank (IDB), also known as Banco Interamericano de Desarrollo (BID), is a multilateral development institution founded in 1959 and headquartered in Washington, D.C. It serves as the primary source of financing and technical assistance for economic, social, and institutional development in Latin America and the Caribbean.
The IDB comprises 48 member countries, including 26 borrowing members in the region and 22 non-borrowing members from Europe, North America, and Asia. The IDB Group includes the IDB (public sector focus), IDB Invest (private sector support), and IDB Lab (innovation and entrepreneurship). It provides sovereign loans, private financing, and knowledge products to address challenges like poverty reduction, climate action, infrastructure, and regional integration.
In sectors relevant to the chemical industry, the IDB supports initiatives such as IDB LAC Minerals for value-added processing of critical minerals, green hydrogen and ammonia projects, and innovation challenges for chemicals and hazardous waste management in the Caribbean.
