Established in 2021 following an award of AUD 39 million in Commonwealth funding over 10 years, HILT CRC operates as HILT CRC Limited, a company limited by guarantee registered in Victoria with its primary operations and headquarters in Adelaide, South Australia. It brings together more than 60 partners from industry, research organisations and government, with total investments exceeding AUD 200 million in cash and in-kind contributions. The centre manages over 20 active research projects and maintains international linkages, including through the Net Zero Industries Mission.

HILT CRC conducts industry-led research across process technologies for green metals production, cross-cutting solutions such as hydrogen use and high-temperature processes, and enabling factors including policy, markets and infrastructure. Its work supports the transition of Australian heavy industry to net-zero emissions while preserving jobs and unlocking economic opportunities in green steel, alumina and related products.
