Gaz Réseau Distribution France (GRDF) is France’s main natural gas distribution system operator and a subsidiary of ENGIE. It designs, operates, maintains, and develops local gas distribution networks across most of the country under public-service concession agreements with municipalities. Distinct from transmission operators, GRDF’s role is to deliver gas from the high-pressure network to residential, commercial, and industrial customers, providing connections, metering, network maintenance, and 24/7 emergency response.
Operating under the oversight of the French energy regulator (CRE), GRDF manages access to the distribution grid and implements safety, integrity, and leak-detection programs. The company supports the energy transition by enabling the injection of renewable gases—particularly biomethane—into the distribution network and by deploying smart metering (Gazpar) to improve measurement and network management. GRDF does not produce or trade gas; its activities focus on regulated distribution services and facilitating reliable, compliant access to gas for end users and industrial sites.
