The Einstein Center Digital Future (ECDF) is Berlin's premier interdisciplinary research institution focused on the digital transformation of society. Founded in 2017 and currently in its second funding phase until 2028, it serves as a hub for independent, cutting-edge research at the interface of technology, society, and various application domains.
Operating as a large-scale public-private partnership, the ECDF brings together all four Berlin universities (Technische Universität Berlin, Freie Universität Berlin, Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin, and Universität der Künste Berlin), Charité – Universitätsmedizin Berlin, additional research institutes, and more than 30 industry and foundation partners. It is funded with around €46.5 million by the Einstein Foundation Berlin, supplemented by matching funds and third-party grants, enabling the establishment of numerous professorships and collaborative projects.
The center's research spans three core areas: Transforming Communities, addressing societal impacts of automation and connectivity with emphasis on a European data economy; Integrated Health, developing secure, AI-supported, patient-centered healthcare systems; and Sustainable Cities, leveraging digital tools for resilient urban development. Researchers contribute to fields including digital health data applications, biomedical imaging, and decision-support technologies.
Through its collaborative model, the ECDF positions Berlin as a leading European center for digitalization research, fostering innovation while maintaining scientific independence and engaging stakeholders from academia, industry, policy, and civil society.
