Deutsche Energy Terminal GmbH (DET) is a federally owned German company responsible for the operation of liquefied natural gas (LNG) import terminals using floating storage and regasification units (FSRUs). Established as a wholly owned subsidiary of the German federal government, it commenced operations in January 2023 to enhance energy security following the 2022 disruption in Russian gas supplies.
The company manages the technical and commercial operations of FSRU terminals at Wilhelmshaven (including the Wilhelmshaven 1 terminal with the Höegh Esperanza FSRU) and Brunsbüttel, with a project in Stade under development. Its activities encompass receiving LNG via ship-to-ship transfers, regasification on board the FSRUs, and feeding natural gas into the German transmission grid through dedicated pipelines. DET also markets regasification capacities on a non-discriminatory basis through international auctions and platforms.
Headquartered in Düsseldorf, DET operates in Lower Saxony and Schleswig-Holstein, contributing significantly to Germany's LNG import capacity, with annual feed-in volumes reaching tens of terawatt-hours. Revenues net of costs are returned to the federal budget. The company collaborates with partners for infrastructure development and grid integration, positioning it as a central player in Germany's diversified energy supply infrastructure and the transition to sustainable energy sources.
