CarbonBridge JV is a joint venture established by Ambrian Energy GmbH and Messer SE & Co. KGaA to develop and operate Germany’s first CO₂ export terminal in Bremen.
The company focuses on providing CO₂ logistics solutions, including intermediate storage of liquefied carbon dioxide, rail-based unloading from tank wagons, and ship loading for export to geological storage sites primarily in the North Sea.
Key infrastructure includes dedicated tank farms with capacities up to 55,000 cubic meters (scalable), multiple rail unloading tracks, and jetty facilities for vessels up to 30,000 tons. It supports “Carbon Capture as a Service” models for hard-to-abate industries such as cement, steel, glass, and waste incineration.
Operating in Germany, the JV combines Ambrian Energy’s expertise in energy logistics and hazardous goods handling with Messer’s experience in CO₂ processing and its ZeCarb solution. The project received EU antitrust clearance in 2026 and is planned to commence operations around 2031 with an initial capacity of about 2.3 million metric tons per year, expandable to 4 million.
As a pioneering infrastructure provider in the carbon capture, utilization, and storage (CCUS) sector, CarbonBridge plays a central role in enabling Germany’s transition to climate neutrality by facilitating the transport of captured CO₂ from emitters to permanent storage sinks.
