The Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy (Bundesministerium für Wirtschaft und Energie; BMWE) is a German federal government ministry responsible for national economic policy, industrial strategy, and energy policy, including the energy transition. It sets the regulatory framework for competition, foreign trade, small and medium-sized enterprises, digitalization, and innovation, and represents Germany in European and international economic and energy forums.
For the chemical and process industries, the ministry designs and implements policies that shape energy markets and costs, efficiency and climate-protection requirements, and support for decarbonization and industrial transformation. Through subordinate agencies such as the Federal Office for Economic Affairs and Export Control (BAFA), it administers funding, grants, and compliance programs in areas including energy efficiency, renewable energy, hydrogen, and security of supply—directly influencing capital investment, operations, and emissions in energy‑intensive sectors.
