ASTM International is a global, non-profit standards organization that develops and publishes voluntary consensus standards for materials, products, systems, and services. Founded in 1898 as the American Society for Testing and Materials and headquartered in West Conshohocken, Pennsylvania, it maintains a portfolio of more than 12,000 active standards used worldwide across manufacturing, construction, transportation, energy, and the chemical value chain.
For the chemical industry, ASTM standards provide widely adopted test methods, material specifications, and practices covering areas such as chemical analysis, polymers and plastics, petroleum products and lubricants, solvents, paints and coatings, corrosion and wear, environmental testing, sampling, and laboratory quality control. These standards support interoperability, product performance, safety, and regulatory compliance, and are frequently referenced in contracts and regulations.
ASTM’s standards are developed through an open, consensus-driven process involving industry, academia, government, and consumer stakeholders organized in technical committees. In addition to standards development, ASTM offers proficiency testing, certification and auditing programs, and training to help laboratories and companies implement and validate standardized methods.
