About African Union

The African Union Commission (AUC) is the secretariat and executive arm of the African Union, responsible for implementing decisions of the AU’s policymaking organs and coordinating continental policy across its member states. Headquartered in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, the AUC works with national governments, Regional Economic Communities, and international partners to advance economic integration, infrastructure development, science and technology, public health, and environmental governance under the AU’s strategic frameworks.

For stakeholders in the chemical industry, the AUC’s work is relevant to industrialization and trade facilitation, regulatory harmonization, and standards development across African markets. It supports continental initiatives that touch chemicals and related value chains—such as safe chemicals and waste management, environmental and health protection, development of regional manufacturing capacity (including pharmaceuticals and agro-inputs), and strengthening of cross-border supply chains. The Commission also promotes investment-enabling policies, capacity building, and coordination on international agreements pertinent to chemicals and sustainability. Through these roles, the AUC helps shape the policy environment affecting chemical production, trade, and compliance across Africa.
