A1 Iron & Steel Tanzania Ltd is a private Tanzanian company developing what is described as the country’s first fully integrated steelmaking facility. The project is located in the Nala area of Dodoma City and involves an estimated TZS 600 billion investment in a blast furnace and Basic Oxygen Furnace (BOF) plant that will process locally mined iron ore into finished steel products.
The facility is designed to produce hot-rolled coils (HR coils) as well as downstream items including roofing sheets, steel mesh, binding wire and nails for construction, infrastructure, manufacturing and agriculture sectors. It aims to achieve full value addition within Tanzania, reducing reliance on raw mineral exports and imported steel products while serving domestic and regional East African markets.
Construction was scheduled to begin in July 2026 with completion targeted within 15 months. The project is expected to generate approximately 1,500 direct jobs and more than 5,000 indirect jobs through supply chains and related industries. Managing Director Himanshu Tiwari has represented the company in government meetings.
In August 2026, the company awarded a contract to John Cockerill India for a cold rolling complex featuring a push-pull pickling line with acid regeneration, a 6-Hi reversible cold rolling mill and a continuous galvanizing (Galvalume) line. This downstream processing supports production of higher-value cold-rolled and coated flat steel products. The company aligns with Tanzania’s mineral beneficiation and industrialisation policies.
