Keihin Industrial Zone – Kawasaki Coastal Complex (Kawasaki Petrochemical Complex / 川崎臨海部 石油化学コンビナート)

KawasakiJapanKanagawa Prefecture

The Keihin Industrial Zone – Kawasaki Coastal Complex is one of East Asia’s most densely integrated petrochemical, specialty materials, and energy refining clusters. Situated along Tokyo Bay in Kawasaki City (Kanagawa Prefecture), the complex lies at the industrial core of the Greater Tokyo Megalopolis (market of 38+ million inhabitants).

The park encompasses contiguous waterfront industrial districts—principally Ukishima-cho, Chidori-cho, Mizue-cho, Ohgimachi, and Yako—interconnected through comprehensive underground pipeline grids, utility corridors, deepwater maritime berths, and dedicated industrial freight rail lines.

Core operational pillars include:

  1. Refining & Basic Petrochemicals: Upstream crude distillation (247,000 bpd), naphtha steam cracking (∼988,000 t/a total ethylene capacity across two units), and aromatics extraction (BTX, paraxylene).
  2. Intermediate & Specialty Chemicals: Ethylene Oxide (EO), Ethylene Glycols (EG), ethanolamines, chlor-alkali, acrylic acid/esters, cyanoacrylates, high-purity electronic specialty gases, and pharmaceutical DDS lipids.
  3. Advanced Polymers & Synthetic Elastomers: Polyethylene (HDPE, LLDPE), engineered Polypropylene (PP), Nitrile Butadiene Rubber (NBR), Hydrogenated NBR (Zetpol™), Butyl Rubber (IIR, Halobutyl), and Cyclo-Olefin optical polymers (ZEONEX™).
  4. Circular Economy & Energy Transition: World-pioneering Kawasaki Eco-Town industrial symbiosis, commercial chemical recycling of waste plastics into low-carbon hydrogen (Ecoann™), carbon-neutral complex initiatives, and clean hydrogen pipeline infrastructure.
