The industrial zone at Pajaritos, by the Pajaritos lagoon south-east of the centre of Coatzacoalcos, which grew from the petrochemical complex Pemex opened there in 1967 and is now shared by several companies. Pemex keeps an ethylene plant, idle in recent years, and a marine terminal; Orbia and Cydsa each make chlorine and caustic soda, while Pro-Agroindustria's urea plants and Innophos' phosphoric acid works sit alongside. The vinyl chloride plant that Pemex and Orbia ran together was destroyed by an explosion in 2016 and not rebuilt.
