Agreement
On August 14, Celanese and VIGOR signed a strategic partnership at the Celanese Shanghai Commercial and Technology Center to develop and commercialize lightweight plastic joint solutions for humanoid robots. Key attendees included VIGOR CEO Hoi-sang Chan and Todd Elliott, Senior Vice President, Engineered Materials, at Celanese.
Technical objectives
VIGOR’s R&D target is to reduce joint-module weight by more than 30% versus traditional metal designs by replacing steel with high-performance plastics while retaining transmission precision and long-term reliability. The companies identified core material performance demands driven by humanoid applications: high strength and rigidity, exceptional temperature resistance and thermal stability, precision transmission with self-lubricating properties, and extreme lightweighting with dimensional accuracy for high-speed starts/stops, high-frequency reciprocating motion and complex loading.
Material and production support
Celanese will supply targeted high-performance plastic materials and comprehensive technical support, offering customized formulations aligned to VIGOR’s specifications. The collaboration includes targeted material commercialization, full lifecycle validation and work to ensure consistent performance at mass-production scale. VIGOR brings over 40 years of experience in precision plastic transmission systems and precision molding.
Commercial outlook
The partners intend to deepen collaborative innovation and accelerate commercialization of high-performance plastic joint solutions for industrial, commercial and specialized service robotics, combining Celanese’s materials science and local application development with VIGOR’s precision gear design and manufacturing expertise.
