UPM, Ingredion and Paramelt test starch-based grease barriers for recyclable paper packaging
- UPM, Ingredion and Paramelt are collaborating to develop starch-based barrier solutions for paper food packaging.
- Developed structures use UPM Solide™ Lucent 78 gsm and UPM Asendo™ 65 gsm specialty papers.
- Ingredion supplies starch-based barrier coatings while Paramelt provides bio-based heat-seal and barrier coatings; UPM supplies substrates and integration.
- A co-created structure based on UPM Solide Lucent 78 gsm passed Part 1 recyclability testing at Western Michigan University; samples will be shown at PACK EXPO Chicago Oct 18–21.
Collaboration objective
UPM, Ingredion and Paramelt are jointly developing plant-based starch barrier technologies to broaden recyclable paper-based options for food packaging, with a focus on grease resistance and suitability for demanding food applications. The work aims to provide converters and brand owners with higher-performance, renewable packaging structures.
Technologies and roles
The structures under development are based on UPM Solide™ Lucent 78 gsm and UPM Asendo™ 65 gsm papers. Ingredion contributes starch-based barrier coatings intended to enhance grease resistance, Paramelt offers bio-based heat-seal and barrier coatings, and UPM supplies the specialty paper substrates and integrates the components into packaging structures.
Testing and demonstration
The co-created paper-based structure using UPM Solide Lucent 78 gsm passed Part 1 recyclability testing at Western Michigan University. Samples from the collaboration will be displayed at the UPM Specialty Materials PACK EXPO Booth W-46118 in Chicago, October 18–21.
