UKAEA and Eni launch RH3OVA to provide fusion fuel-cycle services
- RH3OVA is a UK‑incorporated joint venture between UKAEA and Eni to serve the global fusion energy sector.
- The company offers end-to-end fuel‑cycle services from feasibility studies to deployment and operational support, including validated digital process models.
- Focus is on deuterium–tritium fuel cycles, addressing tritium production, recovery from exhaust gases and refinement for re‑use because tritium is extremely rare.
- RH3OVA builds on the UKAEA–Eni H3AT Tritium Loop Facility collaboration and aligns with the UK’s Fusion Strategy and UKAEA organisational strategy.
Joint venture and purpose
UKAEA and Eni have incorporated a joint venture named RH3OVA (pronounced Reeova) in the UK to combine technical and industrial expertise and deliver specialist consultancy and operational services to the global fusion industry.
Services offered
RH3OVA will provide end-to-end services across the fuel lifecycle, from early-stage feasibility studies to deployment and operational support, and will supply digital process models validated with fusion‑relevant data sets.
Tritium fuel‑cycle focus
The venture targets the deuterium–tritium fuel cycle where deuterium is extractable from seawater but tritium is extremely rare; RH3OVA will address tritium production, its use in energy generation, recovery from exhaust gases and refinement for reuse. UKAEA cites experience from operating the Joint European Torus and 30 years of tritium operations as foundational expertise to be scaled beyond the lab.
Strategic context
RH3OVA reinforces the strategic collaboration between UKAEA and Eni, builds on their work on the UKAEA‑Eni H3AT Tritium Loop Facility, and delivers a strategic goal within the UK’s Fusion Strategy and UKAEA’s organisational strategy while supporting Eni’s positioning in fusion development.
