- Trinseo developed a recyclable thermoplastic polycarbonate unidirectional (PC UD) tape battery top cover.
- Prototype thin-wall designs are 1.0 mm and 1.5 mm thick and use flame-retardant PC UD tape and organosheets for fire-resistant composite casings.
- The top cover demonstrator debuted at CIBF 2026 (May 13–15, Shenzhen) and will be shown at The Battery Show Europe 2026 (June 9–11, Stuttgart).
Product development
Trinseo developed its first recyclable battery top cover using thermoplastic polycarbonate unidirectional (PC UD) tape at its Global Innovation Center in Europe to address weight and safety requirements for EV battery systems.
Design and materials
The demonstrator uses flame‑retardant PC UD tape and organosheets in thin‑wall configurations (1.0 mm and 1.5 mm) as an alternative to metal and thermoset casings.
Applications and advantages
Thermoplastic composites aim to reduce mass, improve fire performance and support more circular manufacturing; recyclability is available in select facilities and may vary by region. Materials are applicable across mobility sectors that demand high stiffness, strength, thin‑wall design and high‑rate production.
Exhibitions
