Toray to Build New Battery Separator Film Plant in Hungary

At a glance
  • The new facility in Hungary will increase BSF production capacity by 20%.
  • Operations are scheduled to begin in July 2021.
  • Existing BSF production facilities are in Japan and South Korea.
  • BSF demand is rising due to growth in EVs and consumer electronics.

New Production Facility

Toray Industries, Inc. will establish a new production facility for battery separator film (BSF) in Nyergesújfalu, Hungary. This facility, part of Toray Industries Hungary Kft. (THU), will increase the Toray Group’s total BSF production capacity by approximately 20%. Operations are scheduled to begin in July 2021.

Existing Facilities

The Toray Group currently operates BSF production facilities at the Nasu Plant in Japan and in South Korea. Toray Battery Separator Film Korea Limited (TBSK) handles development, production, and sales, while Toray BSF Coating Korea Limited (TBCK) manages coating processes. Since 2018, new lines have been started up following facility investments announced in 2017.

Rising Demand

Global demand for BSF is expected to grow rapidly due to increasing applications in consumer electronics, energy storage systems, and electric vehicles (EVs). In Europe, heightened environmental awareness and the spread of eco-friendly EVs are driving battery manufacturers to enter the market actively.

Strategic Approach

Toray follows a strategy of “local production for local consumption” to meet growing demand and support local economic development. The company’s Medium-term Management Program, Project AP-G 2019, aims to expand high value-added products in growth fields, with BSF business expansion as a top priority.
