Continuous Operation Milestone
The hydrogen and carbon dioxide production plant (HYCO) of Carburos Metálicos in Tarragona has achieved 700 days of uninterrupted operation as of the end of July. This milestone surpasses the previous record of 450 days, highlighting the plant's efficiency and reliability in supplying hydrogen to its main customer, Repsol.
Operational Significance
This continuous operation means the plant has been supplying hydrogen 24/7, meeting the critical needs of Repsol's facilities in Tarragona. The high volume of hydrogen consumed by Repsol necessitates continuous supply, as storage is not feasible.
Plant Details
Located in La Pobla de Mafumet, the HYCO plant was inaugurated in May 2002 after an investment of 58 million euros. Spanning an area of 10,000 m2, it is one of the largest hydrogen production facilities in Spain and a key site within the Air Products group, which operates over 60 similar plants globally.
Production Capacity
The plant employs Steam Methane Reformer (SMR) technology to produce 144 tons of hydrogen per day. This hydrogen is supplied to major companies like Repsol for crude oil processing and to other industrial and food sector clients via road transport. The plant's operations are certified with ISO 9001:2008.
