Teijin and FUJIFILM Business Innovation achieve closed-loop recycling for multifunction-printer exterior parts

Scheme established

Teijin and FUJIFILM Business Innovation have created a horizontal closed-loop recycling scheme that converts exterior parts from used multifunction printers into material for new remanufactured front covers.

Material and product

Teijin formulates Multion® CM, a polycarbonate-based alloy resin containing 80% recycled content, which is used to manufacture visible exterior components such as front covers for remanufactured multifunction printers.

Recovery and processing

FUJIFILM Business Innovation collects used devices through its network, removes metals and non-target plastics, and recovers selected plastics. A wet grinding process is used to reduce contamination before the recycled material is turned into Multion® CM.

Property restoration and appearance

To address the lower physical properties typical of post-consumer recycled plastic, Teijin applies design-for-recycling and proprietary compounding for physical-property restoration and color adjustment, achieving color matching for white shades that had been difficult with conventional closed-loop mechanical recycling.

Background

FUJIFILM Business Innovation has pursued product-life circularity, including refurbishment and cleaning processes, since 1995; the new recycling route targets parts previously replaced because blast processing could not restore appearance.
