Syensqo stops C6O4 production at Spinetta Marengo

Key highlights
  • Syensqo has ceased production of the fluorosurfactant C6O4 at its Spinetta Marengo (Italy) facility.
  • The action implements a 2022 commitment to phase out fluorosurfactants by 2026.
  • A polymerization process developed through R&I since 2019 enables nearly 100% of the company's fluoropolymers to be made without PFAS processing aids.
  • Approximately 1% of site production—highly specialized fluoropolymers for hydrogen and semiconductor uses—still requires further research and will be produced using existing C6O4 inventories with emissions-reduction measures.

Production change

The company has stopped producing the fluorosurfactant C6O4 at its Spinetta Marengo site in Italy. This step follows a prior commitment to phase out fluorosurfactants by 2026 and is presented as the final production stop for that specific processing aid at the site.

New manufacturing technology

Research and innovation investments since 2019 produced a new polymerization process that removes the need for fluorosurfactants while maintaining fluoropolymer performance. These non-fluorosurfactant technologies have been rolled out across product lines, enabling the shift in manufacturing practice.

Scope and exceptions

Nearly 100% of the company's fluoropolymers are now manufactured without PFAS processing aids. A small portion—around 1% of the site's production volume—consists of highly specialized fluoropolymers for hydrogen and semiconductor applications that still require further research and qualification; existing C6O4 inventories will be used for those with best-available emissions controls.

Rationale and applications

The move is framed as part of a strategy to reduce manufacturing emissions and to align with evolving regulatory expectations, while continuing to supply fluoropolymers used in semiconductors, batteries, hydrogen, medical, clean water and digital infrastructure applications.
