Syensqo expands certified circular portfolio with UL validation for Fomblin Y

Key highlights
  • UL Environmental Claim Validation (UL 2809) granted to Fomblin® Y in September 2026.
  • Syensqo previously received UL validation in 2025 for selected high‑performance elastomers and lubricant fluids.
  • Around 40% of the fluorine allocated to the newly certified products is sourced from post‑industrial recycled hydrofluoric acid (PIR HF) via a mass balance approach.
  • Mass balance allocation yields an assigned 25%wt recycled content in the final Fomblin® Y molecule; Syensqo is investing at Spinetta Marengo, Italy, to increase fluorine recovery.

Certification and product scope

In September 2026 Syensqo obtained UL Environmental Claim Validation under UL 2809 for Fomblin® Y, extending a circular portfolio that already included selected high‑performance elastomers and lubricant fluids validated in 2025.

Recycled fluorine accounting

Syensqo applies a mass balance system to allocate recycled fluorine to final products. Around 40% of the fluorine content allocated to these newly certified products is sourced from post‑industrial recycled (PIR) hydrofluoric acid (HF). Fomblin® Y products are fully fluorinated synthetic polymers with fluorine accounting for more than 65% by weight; under the applied mass balance allocation the final molecule is assigned 25%wt recycled content.

Manufacturing investment and policy context

To support increased use of recycled fluorine, Syensqo is investing at its Spinetta Marengo manufacturing site in Italy to enhance recycling capabilities and raise fluorine recovery, strengthening availability of recycled raw materials for its specialty polymers. The effort is presented as contributing to the EU Critical Raw Materials Act objective of reducing dependency on virgin fluorspar—listed as a critical raw material—and increasing circular use of strategic raw materials to bolster European value‑chain resilience.
