H-Power signs deal to sell 5,000 kg green hydrogen from cracked ammonia to Protium

Key highlights
  • H-Power will sell 5,000 kg of bio‑ammonia‑derived fuel‑cell grade green hydrogen to Protium.
  • The hydrogen is certified ISO 14687 Grade D at 99.97% purity.
  • The Environment Agency amended H‑Power’s Dunsfold permit to allow third‑party sales until 31 August 2026.
  • H-Power’s HY5 decentralised cracker targets up to 500 kg/day and commercial availability by end of 2026, positioned as an alternative to a 1.2 MW electrolyser.

Deal and volumes

H-Power has contracted to sell 5,000 kilograms of fuel‑cell grade green hydrogen produced from bio‑ammonia in its pilot ammonia cracker to Protium. The product is certified ISO 14687 Grade D at 99.97% hydrogen purity; H-Power notes 5,000 kg can power an LC30 fuel cell generator (30 kW) continuously for more than 100 days.

Regulatory milestone

The sale follows an amendment to H-Power’s Dunsfold facility permit by the Environment Agency, permitting the sale of hydrogen produced from the ammonia cracker to third parties until 31 August 2026. H-Power cites DEFRA and the Environment Agency’s permitting approach as enabling scale‑up of ammonia and hydrogen technologies.

Distribution and logistics

H-Power and Protium signed an initial 12‑month (extendable) agreement to create a ‘virtual depot’ at Dunsfold where Protium can store and fill multiple cylinder packages (MCPs) with hydrogen from the cracker, expanding regional distribution capacity across the South East and the UK.

Product roadmap

H-Power’s HY5 decentralised portable cracker, built on pilot learnings and featuring a proprietary dual heat‑source architecture, remains on track for commercial availability by the end of calendar year 2026 with up to 500 kg/day capacity and is positioned as a lower‑cost bulk fuel‑cell grade hydrogen solution and an alternative to a 1.2 MW electrolyser.
