Siemens Advances EPD Automation and Transparency

Key highlights
  • Siemens' EPD tool is approved by EPD-Global for verified declarations.
  • The verification process is shortened through advanced automation.
  • Siemens targets 100% EPD coverage by 2030.
  • EPDs provide environmental impact data like CO₂ emissions and resource use.

EPD Tool Approval

Siemens' automated solution for creating environmental product declarations (EPDs) has received official approval from EPD-Global, the Norwegian program operator responsible for verifying and publishing EPDs. This approval allows Siemens to publish independently verified EPDs for its products, significantly reducing the verification process time.

Environmental Product Declarations

An EPD serves as a standardized environmental fact sheet for a product, detailing its environmental impact, including CO₂ emissions and resource usage throughout its lifecycle. EPDs provide transparency and comparability, aiding customers in making informed purchasing decisions. While mandatory in some sectors like construction, EPDs are becoming increasingly essential as global sustainability regulations tighten.

Siemens' EPD Coverage Goal

Currently, Siemens offers ISO-compliant self-declared EPDs for over 50% of its product portfolio. With the new certification of its internal EPD creation process, Siemens plans to significantly increase the number of independently verified EPDs, aiming for 100% EPD coverage by 2030. Although not all EPDs require third-party verification, the new process enables Siemens to efficiently provide verified EPDs at scale.
