Deployment and purpose

Siemens Energy has installed and commissioned an SGT-800 Industrial Demonstrator Turbine at the gas-fired power plant within Marl Chemical Park to validate new gas turbine technologies and components under real operating conditions in a commercial plant environment.

Operational setup and risk management

The demonstrator will run for four years, providing electrical power and process steam to site users while enabling continuous monitoring and planned component changes. SYNEQT, a wholly owned Evonik subsidiary that operates the plant, hosts the demonstrator which replaced one of four SGT-800 units; the original turbine remains on site to safeguard availability and limit business-interruption risk.

Validation scope and methods

Validation focuses on blades, vanes and burners as well as parts produced by additive manufacturing, advanced materials and coatings. The demonstrator complements prior engineering, rig and component-level testing and simulation by delivering thousands of hours of operating experience needed to support qualification of next-generation component designs.

Partnership angle

Siemens Energy says long-term validation under actual load needs customer partnerships for real-world data and risk control. SYNEQT emphasises that open OEM‑operator cooperation is essential to accelerate technology validation while maintaining reliable plant operation.
