PPG launches Teslin Envos substrate with 30% bio-based content and lower carbon footprint
- Contains 30% bio-based content, calculated using ASTM D6866.
- Cuts cradle-to-gate carbon footprint by up to 25% versus PPG Teslin SP1000, per an ISO-aligned product carbon footprint analysis.
- Produced at a facility where purchased renewable electricity credits are applied and initially offered in a 10‑mil thickness with more options planned.
- Targets secure credentials, durable and specialty labels, RFID labels and ID cards and uses the same unique microporous technology with noted performance improvements.
Product overview
PPG Teslin Envos is a synthetic microporous substrate that incorporates 30% bio-based content and is positioned as an upgraded alternative to PPG Teslin SP1000. The material delivers improved brightness and a bright white appearance, plus better tear and puncture resistance, tensile strength and flexibility, while remaining compatible with a broad range of printing and finishing processes.
Sustainability and testing
Bio-based content was calculated using ASTM D6866. PPG reports up to a 25% reduction in cradle-to-gate carbon footprint (kg CO2e/kg) versus Teslin SP1000 based on an analysis that used primary supplier and PPG manufacturing data together with secondary life cycle inventory data and was conducted in a manner substantially consistent with ISO 14040, ISO 14044 and ISO 14067.
Applications and availability
The substrate is aimed at secure credentials such as government IDs and passports, durable and specialty labels, RFID labels and identification cards where long-term performance is critical. It is manufactured at a facility where PPG applies purchased renewable electricity credits and is currently available in a 10‑mil thickness, with additional options planned and samples available on request.
