UPM, Uteco and Siegwerk launch paper-based secondary packaging solution

Key highlights
  • UPM supplies the barrier base paper, Siegwerk provides the CIRKIT BAR SEAL coating, and Uteco applies it using high-definition flexographic technology.
  • Paper content can be increased to up to 90% in secondary packaging while maintaining required performance for demanding applications.
  • The coated paper offers moisture and grease resistance, heat sealing, and recyclability through standard paper recycling streams (CEPI/4evergreen v2).
  • A joint production trial integrated coating, printing and heat sealing in a single pass, improving industrial-scale efficiency and saving time, energy and production costs.

What they developed

UPM Specialty Materials, Siegwerk and Uteco have created a paper-based solution for secondary packaging that combines UPM barrier base paper, Siegwerk's CIRKIT BAR SEAL coating and Uteco's high-definition flexographic application technology. The design is intended as a practical entry point for brand owners to increase renewable material content while keeping primary packaging for product protection.

Performance and recyclability

The partners report paper content can be raised to up to 90% without compromising performance for demanding applications. The applied coating provides moisture and grease resistance and heat sealing, and the resulting material is compatible with standard paper recycling streams (CEPI/4evergreen v2).

Production trial and industrial scale

Joint production trials demonstrated that coating, printing and heat sealing can be integrated in a single pass on industrial equipment. The partners say this enables efficient industrial-scale production and helps converters produce functional paper packaging while saving time, energy and production costs.

Demonstration

Samples of the secondary packaging will be shown at UPM Specialty Materials’ stand at Pack Expo West (Hall booth W-46118).
