Expansion of Production Capacity
Orion Engineered Carbons S.A. has announced plans to expand its production capacity for Gas Blacks at its Cologne (Kalscheuren) plant in Germany. This move is in response to the growing global demand for waterborne and solvent-borne coatings.
Technical Specifications
Orion’s Gas Blacks are known for their excellent fineness and narrow particle size distribution, which provide the deepest blackness available for specialty carbon blacks. These qualities make them highly suitable for demanding coatings applications.
Strategic Realignment
According to Corning Painter, Orion’s CEO, this expansion is part of the company's strategy to realign its portfolio towards higher value-added carbon blacks, particularly for specialty and technical rubber applications.
Global Distribution
Dr. Sandra Niewiem, Vice President of the Business Line Specialty Carbon Black, noted that products from the Cologne plant are shipped globally. They are used in various high-end coatings and printing applications, including high jet automotive OEM and refinish, antistatic coatings, packaging, and UV curing inks.
