At a glance
  • A 10 million-euro investment will fund the demo plant for FDCA production.
  • The plant will be located in Terni and is part of an expansion program.
  • Invitalia is supporting the project with 5.8 million euros in subsidies.
  • Completion is scheduled for the end of 2021.

Investment and Location

Novamont has announced a 10 million-euro investment to construct a demonstration plant for the production of furandicarboxylic acid (FDCA) in Terni. This investment is part of the company's broader strategy to expand and diversify its production capabilities.

Support and Funding

The project is supported by Invitalia, the Italian agency for inward investment and economic development, which is providing 5.8 million euros in subsidies. This includes a 5 million-euro subsidized loan and an unsecured loan for the remainder.

Technological Advancements

FDCA, derived from sugars, will serve as a raw material for synthesizing polyesters and biodegradable, compostable biomaterials. These materials will be used to produce fifth-generation MATER-BI and other products with oxygen and carbon dioxide barrier properties, particularly for the food packaging sector.

Timeline and Integration

The industrialization phase of the project is scheduled for completion by the end of 2021. Once completed, the Terni plant will be integrated into the local bioeconomy infrastructure and interconnected with Novamont's other sites.
