Project Overview
Nouryon and INEOS Nitriles have initiated the construction of new facilities at INEOS’ Köln site in Germany. These units will produce raw materials for Nouryon’s biodegradable chelates, which are used in detergents and other industries. The project is scheduled for completion between 2021 and 2022.
Market Demand
The demand for chelates has surged following the European ban on phosphates in consumer automatic dishwasher detergents. Chelates offer a more sustainable alternative to phosphates.
Operational Details
INEOS will be responsible for operating and maintaining the new facilities, as well as supplying key raw materials. This agreement mirrors an existing partnership between INEOS and Nouryon at their facilities in Lima, Ohio, USA.
Strategic Impact
The new facilities will enhance Nouryon’s global supply of biodegradable chelates to markets in Asia, Europe, and North America. This expansion follows the completion of similar production facilities in Ningbo, China, in 2016, and aims to meet growing customer needs in the European market.
