MOL Group opens 37.4 MWp solar park and 40 MWh battery at Algyő

Key highlights
  • A 37.4 MWp solar park was commissioned at MOL’s Algyő site.
  • An accompanying battery energy storage system provides 20 MW nominal power and 40 MWh capacity.
  • The Algyő installation is expected to reduce CO2 emissions by approximately 13,000 tonnes annually.
  • MOL now operates nine solar parks in Hungary totalling 405 MW and targets 500 MWh of storage in Hungary by 2030; regional PV capacity reaches 415 MWp.

Project details

MOL Group commissioned a 37.4 MWp solar park and a battery energy storage system with 20 MW nominal power and 40 MWh storage at its Algyő site. The solar park, together with existing power plants at Algyő, can fully cover the electricity demand of MOL’s Algyő region.

Operational impact

The investment strengthens on-site energy independence and reduces operating costs by replacing purchased electricity. The Algyő solar plant’s annual generation is equivalent to the yearly electricity consumption of about 22,500 households in Csongrád-Csanád County, while the battery can store and feed back energy equivalent to the annual consumption of roughly 7,300 households. The project is expected to cut CO2 emissions by approximately 13,000 tonnes annually.

Strategic context and targets

The Algyő project forms part of MOL’s SHAPE TOMORROW strategy to expand renewables and storage to manage output variability from weather-dependent generation and increase system flexibility. MOL currently operates nine solar parks in Hungary totalling 405 MW and two energy storage facilities with 80 MWh; by 2030 it plans to install 500 MWh of storage capacity in Hungary.

Partners and regional footprint

The solar park was constructed by ALTEO Plc., in which MOL and its partners hold a 73.8% stake; ALTEO operates about 115 MW of renewable generation. With the new facilities, MOL Group’s total photovoltaic capacity in the region reaches 415 MWp, contributing to an annual reduction of approximately 160,000 tonnes of CO2.
