LANXESS launches Vulkanox 4060 (CCPD) as 6PPD alternative

Product and intent

LANXESS has developed Vulkanox 4060, an anti‑aging tire additive whose active is CCPD (N,N'-Dicyclohexyl-p-phenylenediamine). It is positioned as an alternative to 6PPD, the widely used antidegradant that protects tires from oxygen and ozone.

Ecotoxicology contrast

Degradation products of 6PPD, notably 6PPD quinone, have been linked to coho salmon die‑offs in the U.S. In environmental studies conducted to date, CCPD quinone—the corresponding transformation product of Vulkanox 4060—demonstrated no observed acute effects in coho salmon testing up to the solubility limit.

Regulatory status and supply plans

EU REACH registration (Annex VII) for Vulkanox 4060 is complete, permitting use in the European market. LANXESS says customer testing shows CCPD matches the technical performance of 6PPD while improving the environmental profile, and initial commercial production is planned for the fourth quarter of this year.

Design approach

The active ingredient was chosen under a "Safe and Sustainable by Design" principle, with selection criteria including degradability, bioaccumulation, aquatic toxicity and regulatory compliance to address tightening environmental requirements in tire supply chains.
