LANXESS launches Cosmelin biodegradable esters for cosmetics

Key highlights
  • Cosmelin is a new LANXESS line of readily biodegradable esters for skin, hair, sun care and decorative cosmetics.
  • The esters meet OECD 301 ready biodegradability criteria and degrade significantly faster and more completely than cyclomethicone and dimethicone.
  • Designed for use in silicone-containing and silicone-free formulations, the range substitutes for silicones and covers textures from ultra-light to rich and film-forming.
  • Portfolio includes monoesters, diesters, polyol esters and trimellitates, including Cosmelin 5131 (isononyl isononanoate), 5145 (cetyl ethylhexanoate) and 5141 (triisotridecyl trimellitate).

Product line and purpose

LANXESS has launched Cosmelin, a line of high-performance, readily biodegradable esters formulated for skin, hair, sun care and decorative cosmetics. The range is designed to deliver premium sensory performance in both silicone-containing and silicone-free formulations and can serve as a high-performance alternative to silicones.

Biodegradability and performance

Cosmelin esters meet the OECD 301 standard for ready biodegradability and are described as degrading significantly faster and more completely in the environment than cyclomethicone and dimethicone. For sun care, they offer solvency for organic UV filters and form water-resistant, lightweight, non-whitening protective films.

Sensory range and applications

The portfolio spans textures from very light, fast-spreading to rich, film-forming and is formulated for low irritation and low comedogenicity, making it suitable for sensitive skin products. In skin care the esters provide breathable moisturization and varied skin feels; in color cosmetics they improve wetting, pigment dispersion and adherence; in hair care they reduce friction, smooth cuticles and impart natural shine without greasiness.

Portfolio composition and roadmap

The line comprises monoester, diester, polyol ester and trimellitate chemistries. Highlighted grades include Cosmelin 5131 (isononyl isononanoate) for an ultra-light, powdery feel; Cosmelin 5145 (cetyl ethylhexanoate) for a rich, silky finish; and Cosmelin 5141 (triisotridecyl trimellitate) for high gloss and long-lasting makeup performance. LANXESS intends to expand the Cosmelin portfolio to meet evolving market demand.
