HyDeal España: Largest Renewable Hydrogen Hub in Asturias

At a glance
  • HyDeal España plans to start production in 2025.
  • The project aims for 9.5 GW of solar power and 7.4 GW of electrolysers by 2030.
  • 6.6 million tons of renewable hydrogen will be produced over 20 years.
  • The project will help reduce Spain's CO2 emissions by 4% annually.

Project Overview

HyDeal España is the first industrial implementation of the HyDeal Ambition platform, recognized by IRENA as the largest giga-scale renewable hydrogen project globally. The project will develop, fund, and construct renewable hydrogen production and transmission infrastructures, delivering competitive renewable hydrogen to an industrial complex in Asturias from facilities in Northern Spain. Officially incorporated in November 2021, the project followed a one-year prefeasibility study.

Key Figures and Timelines

Production is planned to start in 2025, with a total installed capacity expected to reach 9.5 GW of solar power and 7.4 GW of electrolysers by 2030. The project aims to produce 6.6 million tons of renewable hydrogen over 20 years, which will help avoid the equivalent of 4% of current Spanish CO2 emissions annually.

Industrial and Financial Model

HyDeal España has developed a disruptive industrial and financial model based on value chain integration, captive solar power, electrolyser industrialization, dedicated hydrogen pipelines, and demand aggregation. This model provides a decisive cost advantage, enabling the mass-scale production of renewable hydrogen to replace fossil fuels in industry, energy, and mobility sectors.

Impact on Spain's Energy Independence

The project aims to provide the equivalent of 5% of Spain’s natural gas imports, contributing to the country’s energy independence. It supports Spain's green energy transformation, fostering industrial revival and sustainable jobs in collaboration with local communities, aligning with Europe’s Fit for 55 agenda.
