GSK to open flagship R&D centre on Cambridge Biomedical Campus

What GSK announced
GSK plans to establish a 300,000 square foot global R&D centre on the Cambridge Biomedical Campus to house more than 1,000 GSK scientists as part of a strategy to accelerate its R&D pipeline.
Site and capabilities
The new facility will feature state-of-the-art, tech-enabled laboratories and infrastructure to support research in Oncology, Respiratory, Hepatology, Vaccines and HIV, and will sit within one of Europe’s largest biomedical campuses.
Investment and operational changes
The company plans to invest £400 million over three years to support the Cambridge development, upgrades at its Ware laboratories and related moves; GSK will vacate its Stevenage R&D site with a phased employee move to be completed by 2029, while retaining its global headquarters in London.
Collaborations and context
The Cambridge site places GSK amid more than 470 biopharma, biotech and AI companies and close to existing partnerships such as the Cambridge Centre for Data-Driven Discovery, Cambridge-GSK translational collaborations and GSK’s Clinical Unit at Addenbrooke’s Hospital. GSK states it invests over £6 billion annually in R&D, with more than £1.5 billion in the UK.
