TOYO Engineering's g‑Methanol™ Demonstration Project Team received the 2026 Engineering Encouragement Special Award from the Engineering Advancement Association of Japan (ENAA), an award that recognizes projects and initiatives contributing to the advancement of Japan's engineering industry. The 18th award cited the project as a pioneering technology expected to lead to commercial implementation. Named recipients were Azusa Okazaki, Shoichi Yamaguchi, Nobuhiro Yoshida and Govind Murali.
Project overview
The project involved construction of a methanol synthesis demonstration plant at NTPC Limited's Vindhyachal Super Thermal Power Station in Madhya Pradesh, India. The plant produces e‑methanol (synthetic methanol) from captured CO₂ and hydrogen produced via water electrolysis powered by renewable energy, implementing TOYO's proprietary g‑Methanol™ technology under actual plant operating conditions.
Technical milestones
In June 2025 the plant produced its first batch of methanol that met required product specifications and successfully demonstrated methanol synthesis at a capacity of 10 tonnes per day using captured CO₂ and electrolytic hydrogen. TOYO reported this as the first such achievement in India and highlighted the demonstration as evidence of the practical viability of carbon‑recycling technology.
Next steps
Building on the demonstration results, TOYO said it will continue to promote adoption and commercialization of e‑methanol to support decarbonization. An award ceremony was held on July 21.
