Clariant and Oltenia Farmers Partner for Environmental Sustainability

At a glance
  • Clariant's Podari plant will process 250,000 tons of cereal straw annually.
  • The plant will produce 50,000 tons of cellulosic ethanol using sunliquid technology.
  • Clariant is investing over EUR 100 million in the plant, supported by EU funding.
  • The construction phase will create approximately 800 jobs, with 120 permanent jobs post-completion.

Overview

Clariant is collaborating with farmers in Oltenia to convert straw into an additional income source. The initiative was introduced during a workshop in Craiova, attended by key figures from the Ministry of Agriculture and Clariant.

Economic Impact

The new plant in Podari will generate jobs and economic growth in the Oltenia region. Approximately 250 local farmers will supply cereal straw, ensuring a reliable supply chain. The plant will process 250,000 tons of straw annually, producing 50,000 tons of cellulosic ethanol.

Job Creation

The construction phase will create around 800 jobs, with 120 permanent positions available once the plant is operational. Additionally, 300 jobs will be created in side industries related to the facility.

Funding and Technology

Clariant is investing over EUR 100 million in the plant, with co-funding from the European Union and the Bio-Based Industries Joint Undertaking. The project utilizes Clariant’s sunliquid technology to produce sustainable, almost carbon-neutral cellulosic ethanol from agricultural residues.

Environmental Benefits

Cellulosic ethanol is an advanced biofuel that supports EU sustainability regulations aimed at promoting renewable energy in transportation. The plant's output will have a significant economic impact on the region, placing Romania on the map of advanced biofuels producers.
