Evonik expands Essen silicone platform with €52m plant and tank farm
- €52 million invested to build a new production plant and large tank farm at Essen Goldschmidtstrasse.
- Expansion raises capacity for organomodified silicones used in polyurethane foams, adhesives, coatings and personal care.
- A 150‑metre pipe bridge connects four production units and 15 assets to five stainless‑steel tanks (tallest 24 m); site area grew from 32 to 35 hectares.
- Project completed while the site remained fully operational with ~80 Evonik employees and more than 230 contractors from 25 partner companies.
Investment and capacity
Evonik invested €52 million to expand its silicone platform at the Essen Goldschmidtstrasse site, building a new production plant and a large tank farm. The facility increases production capacity for organomodified silicones, which are used in applications including polyurethane foams for insulation, mattresses and automotive seating, as well as in adhesives, coatings and personal care products.
Logistics and site changes
The expansion reduces the need to transport intermediates and finished products between sites and optimizes logistics. A new 150‑metre pipe bridge now connects four production units and 15 manufacturing assets to the tank farm. Five stainless‑steel storage tanks— the tallest 24 metres—provide additional raw‑material capacity, and the Essen site footprint increased from 32 to 35 hectares.
Network role and delivery
Essen Goldschmidtstrasse is integrated with Evonik sites in Geesthacht, Obernburg, Wittenburg, Pandino (Italy), Shanghai and Hopewell (Virginia), and the investment is intended to strengthen the global production network and supply security. The project was completed while the site remained fully operational, with about 80 Evonik employees and over 230 contractors from 25 partner companies contributing. Under Evonik’s site-profiling framework, Essen is positioned as a centre of excellence for customer‑specific formulations.
