Evonik expands LNP GMP manufacturing with new Vancouver facility
- Evonik is investing over 150 million CAD (≈93 million EUR) in a new GMP lipid-based drug product facility in Vancouver.
- The project is supported with up to 68 million CAD (≈42 million EUR) from Canada’s Strategic Response Fund.
- Drug product production is planned to begin at the end of 2029; the new facility will have more than three times the manufacturing capacity of the current site and upgraded QC and microbiological testing.
- The lipid nanoparticle (LNP) market alone is estimated to reach US$2.7 billion by 2034.
Investment and schedule
Evonik is investing over 150 million CAD (93 million EUR) to build a GMP drug product manufacturing facility for lipid-based drug delivery in Vancouver, supported with up to 68 million CAD (around 42 million EUR) from the Canadian federal government’s Strategic Response Fund. Drug product production is planned to begin at the end of 2029.
Capacity and capabilities
The new GMP facility will exceed three times the manufacturing capacity of Evonik’s existing site for advanced pharmaceutical products and will expand quality control and microbiological testing capabilities to improve efficiency and support timely release of products for clinical use.
Strategic network and local ties
Evonik Vancouver Laboratories, formerly Transferra Nanosciences and Northern Lipids, provides CDMO services for LNP and liposomal delivery systems from formulation research through GMP clinical manufacturing. Advanced clinical and commercial production processes are transferred to Birmingham, Alabama, while lipid and adjuvant supply comes from Dossenheim and Hanau in Germany, R&D support from the Cambridge Innovation Satellite in Greater Boston, and a new global-scale lipid production facility is being built at Tippecanoe Labs in Lafayette, Indiana.
Market context
Lipids are essential for encapsulating and delivering nucleic acid-based drugs, including mRNA, and LNPs have become a leading delivery system with growing demand; the LNP market alone is estimated to reach US$2.7 billion by 2034. Evonik says the investment strengthens its presence in Vancouver’s life-sciences ecosystem, which hosts more than 2,000 companies and close to 20,000 employees in British Columbia.
