Evonik Sells Betaines Business in Indonesia

Transaction Details

On 31 October 2025, Evonik and joint venture partner PT Sumi Asih finalized the sale of their Bekasi site in Indonesia to Aekyung Chemical Co, Ltd, a major South Korean chemical company. The transaction includes the entire PT Evonik Sumi Asih joint venture, encompassing management, operations, assets, and approximately 60 employees.

Strategic Shift

This divestment is part of Evonik's ongoing strategy to transform its Care Solutions portfolio towards sustainable specialty chemicals. The company aims to focus on eco-friendly solutions, particularly in high-growth areas like cosmetic active ingredients.

Previous Divestments

Evonik has been gradually divesting its betaines business, having sold its operations in Hopewell, Virginia, in August 2022, and in Milton Keynes, UK, in August 2020. The company has also consolidated its European betaine operations in Essen, Germany.

Product Applications

Betaines, the primary product of the Bekasi site, are amphoteric surfactants used in personal care products such as shampoos, hair conditioners, and skin care items, as well as in various other consumer applications.
