Project Progress
Clariant is advancing well with the construction of its sunliquid® cellulosic ethanol plant in Podari, Romania, despite challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic. The team has ensured compliance with all safety regulations, keeping the project on track for completion by the end of 2021.
Funding and Location
The plant benefits from over EUR 40 million in funding from the European Union. It is situated on a 10-hectare site in Podari, near Craiova, leveraging the region's existing logistics and industrial infrastructure.
Production Capacity
Once operational, the facility will process approximately 250,000 tons of straw annually to produce 50,000 tons of sunliquid® cellulosic ethanol. This advanced biofuel is sustainable and carbon-neutral, suitable for blending with conventional fuels.
Milestones and Employment
Significant milestones have been achieved, including the installation of major equipment. The project is expected to create up to 100 direct jobs and around 300 additional jobs in related sectors such as feedstock collection, storage, and transportation.
Training and Development
Clariant is also focusing on recruiting and training staff for the plant. So far, 26 employees have undergone comprehensive training in Germany and Romania, with plans to expand the workforce to 100. Training includes sessions at the pre-commercial sunliquid® plant in Straubing, Germany, and collaboration with the University of Craiova.
