Contract award and scope
Chiyoda was awarded a Front-End Engineering Design (FEED) contract on August 12, 2026 to perform FEED for CO₂ liquefaction facilities that are part of planned CO₂ capture, liquefaction, temporary storage and loading facilities at the Matsuura CCS project.
Project partners and timeline
The project is being jointly studied by Electric Power Development Co., Ltd. (J-POWER) and Kyushu Electric Power Co., Inc., at a coal-fired power plant in Matsuura City, Nagasaki Prefecture, with a target for commercial operation in the early 2030s. The FEED contract is linked to engineering activities carried out by J-POWER and Kyushu Electric following selection of the Matsuura Cluster under the Japan Organization for Metals and Energy Security (JOGMEC) Advanced CCS Projects with Maritime Transport initiative.
Study basis and next steps
Chiyoda will examine the layout of the CO₂ liquefaction facilities and carry out detailed engineering specification studies for potential future commercialization, building on findings from a feasibility study Chiyoda completed on November 13, 2024. The work aims to define an efficient and economically viable CCS configuration for the site.
