Celanese and Röchling adopt POM ECO‑C made from captured CO2
- Röchling Industrial has procured Celanese POM ECO‑C for selected stock shape applications.
- Celanese’s patented CCU process converts CO2 emissions into high‑performance POM using a mass‑balance approach.
- POM ECO‑C offers reduced product carbon footprint while maintaining rigidity, dimensional stability, sliding performance and wear resistance.
- The material is available at scale and can be used without changing established designs or production processes, supporting Scope 3 emissions goals.
Collaboration overview
Celanese and Röchling Industrial announced a collaboration for use of lower‑carbon polyoxymethylene (POM) in stock shape applications. Under the agreement, Röchling has procured Celanese POM ECO‑C for selected stock shape uses as part of its sustainability efforts.
Technology and feedstock
Celanese uses a patented Carbon Capture and Utilization (CCU)‑based process to turn CO2 emissions into chemical building blocks that produce POM. The process incorporates circular feedstock content through a mass‑balance approach while delivering a POM polymer with a reduced product carbon footprint (PCF).
Performance and adoption
Celanese says POM ECO‑C grades retain key POM properties—rigidity, dimensional stability, sliding performance and wear resistance—so customers can adopt the material without changing designs or production processes. Making ECO‑C available at scale is positioned as a way to help customers reduce product carbon footprints and support Scope 3 emissions reduction targets.
Executive comments
Celanese’s Todd Elliott said: “Röchling’s transition to our POM ECO‑C highlights the practical role our CCU technology can play in providing lower‑carbon engineered materials across a variety of industries, including demanding uses.” Röchling’s Florian Helmich added: “Celanese POM ECO‑C is an innovative way to increase sustainability within the chemical and plastics industry. Processing CO₂ that would otherwise be emitted and reusing it as a raw material helps reduce dependence on virgin fossil resources.”
